The New York Jets aren’t poised to have a potent passing game this season. They aren’t even poised to have a Top 20 passing game this season. The team can explain away what they like, but the track record of Justin Fields is concerning.
Rumors out of Pittsburgh were that Fields just wasn’t good enough, and they switched to Russell Wilson. I was at that game, and the fans booed Wilson until he won the game.
Looking at Fields, his lifetime completion percentage is 61.1%. His touchdown percentage is 4% according to StatMuse. Baker Mayfield is at 63.5% and his touchdown percentage is 5.0, but he was much better than that last season in both departments. Can Fields get better? Maybe, but the Jets don’t have enough good receivers to help him out of that.
Last season, Fields threw for just four passes for 40 yards plus. If you don’t go deep enough, the opposing defense keeps moving in, and it’s hard to keep them honest. Fields only had 15 passes of 20 yards plus; again, there’s nothing in his career that suggests he could average eight yards per pass. For example, Josh Allen averaged 7.7%, so let’s not exaggerate this stat when the quarterback has never achieved more than 7.1.
This team will have to run the ball a lot, Fields too, and that will have to suffice. Will that be more successful than last season? I’m not sure.
I don’t expect the Jets to be able to hit on a lot of field goals of 50 yards or more. Surprisingly, Folk was 6-6 over 50 last year, but I’d be surprised if he can do that again at the age of 41.
The Jets looked awful against the Giants. Fields has no competition for the job. The team doesn’t give off any kind of confident vibe on offense.
They have an improved defense in some areas. Let’s see if that continues to get better.
