Flyers Development Camp Final Thoughts

For the teams that didn’t do anything on the ice? I think you’re doing it wrong. Porter Martone literally said he would take things from this camp and carry them with him this summer. It’s hard to do that in theory without on-ice instruction at the very least.

  1. Porter Martone – He was good in camp. I didn’t watch the 3-on-3 and don’t feel it would change my opinion. The scrimmage was more like a game. Martone really gets back on defense and makes good stick plays. He was making good passes but didn’t really get a hold of his offense in the scrimmage. He’s smart and after a year at college, he might be ready. Maybe at the end of the college season. He has to make a choice. He can’t go to camp and then to college. That decision may be coming soon. Brent Flahr said he has multiple offers out there. I would have him go to Penn State. That’s me.
  2. Jett Luchanko never hit the ice. Same with Oliver Bonk and Denver Barkey.
  3. Alex Bump – He settled nicely into camp and shined in the scrimmage and was a leader out there trying to set up teammates. His skating is good but can be better. His hands are really good but putting that all together should be something he does with the Phantoms. If you want him to go through camp and give him a few games, fine, but he didn’t dominate the AHL last year and I think he needs some of that before filling a role in the NHL. He might survive that, but will he thrive?

        4)  Cole Knuble – His skating is much better, and he can move the puck and create. He’s not a high offensive caliber player but there’s room for hard work. He might get a contract later this year.

       5) Jack Berglund – He is a puck control, works hard on the wall guy. A fourth line center with third line potential. He was one of the stronger players in camp who had to be tripped to be stopped at times. You can tell he plays against men.

      6) Spencer Gill – His skating is excellent, and he creates offensively. I see him as a potential second pairing defenseman with a bit of offense.

    7)  Matthew Gard – Lanky, good skater. Seems like a defensive center with some offensive upside. Probably a third-line guy. We shall see.

   8) Luke Vlooswyk – He looks like a physical defender who can seal off the play on the wall. He can move the puck if necessary. A potential bottom pairing guy with good defensive habits.

  9) Jack Murtagh – Second best guy in camp. He was skating great. He made some very difficult passes and set up Jack Nesbitt with a beauty on one of his goals. He was one of the better values in the draft. He may be a second line wing someday.

10) Jack Nesbitt – He showed some skill in the scrimmage. His defensive habits are excellent and skating with the puck is good. He is going to have to win more battles and show off more playmaking to play second line center. I’m not sure he gets there but he can be an elite third-line center in about three seasons. Second line center is a hard job. Ask the Canadiens and other teams who can’t fill it.

11) Heikki Ruohonen – I still see the flashes of speed and skill. The skating is much better, but I need to see more. He was always going to have a longer development runway.

If you don’t see someone. Ask on X and I’ll answer you.

12. Shane Vansaghi – He hits hard. He skates well. He plays for keeps and has fun out there. His passing is good, he needs to work on his shot and shot selection.
