The Mets Will Have to Overcome Poor Roster Construction to Win

The minute Steven Cohen gave David Stearns full reign of the Mets, without any other general manager type in the front office, he was giving him enough rope to hang himself. The owner took a step back; he previously bagged Juan Soto, and he left the rest, including letting popular players go and seeing what Stearns could do. The results have been subpar at best.

In the final stretch of 2025, the Mets went 38-55. They are now 7-10. Are they the second-worst team money could buy in the team’s history? They might be. Time will tell with that one.

The Mets are ranked 22nd in hitting. They are 25th in RBI and runs. Stearns said they are a well-rounded team; these stats say otherwise.

FanGraphs has the Mets as the 10th-best fielding team. Remember, the Mets are paying premium prices for this, including Marcus Semien’s contract. He’s not even in the Top 25! Bo Bichette is, so that’s worked out.

The Mets’ pitching is ranked 5th. This is about the hitters, not the manager. Carlos Mendoza isn’t to blame here. This is a situation where they thought they had replaced the players’ offense that they lost with different types of players, and the result would be better. So far, that calculation has been way off.

I don’t think Connie Mack could make this team look better at the moment, and I know Tommy Pham, 38, isn’t going to prop this up. When Juan Soto returns, that will help, but I can’t say for sure it will fix the problem.
