When Clay Holmes went six innings. He was one of the few Mets starters to do it this year and that was nice to see. So far, Holmes is making a smooth transition but it’s early in the season and there will always be ups and downs.
Kodai Senga pitched into the seventh once this season. He’s the one. He’s the ace, that’s not a surprise. But why can’t some of the others go at least six? Getting out of the fifth has been a struggle. That could lead to bullpen issues down the road.
The DH Production Isn’t Good Enough
The Mets are 15th in baseball in team batting average at .244. Luckily, Pete Alonso has covered a lot of those ills and the pitching has been very good. Starling Marte is hitting .167 with two home runs and 10 RBI. Jesse Winker is hitting .239 with 1 home run and 9 RBI. This has to improve. This has to be one of the worst tandems in baseball so far. That could change but the Phillies are gaining on the Mets so I am looking for areas that can improve.
Jeff McNeil May Be the Key To This Season
He’s hitting .318 and seems to be getting his swing back. If he can transition into a part-time center fielder and second baseman, then he will be filling a need on this team. The Mets have good defensive players in this position but not much offense. I like Tyrone Taylor but he’s limited at the plate. The occasional spot duty by McNeil could provide the extra spark for a lineup that has struggled at times.
