I love watching a great tight end block and pass catch. It’s a skill. I salivate over that and hope every draft that the New York Jets will draft one, a good one would be nice or sign a good one. None of these things seem to be possible.
Mickey Schuler is the Jets’ career leader with 4,819 yards, then Rich Caster is second with 3,382, then the bottom falls out. To put this into perspective, Chicago Bears tight end, Cole Kmet, has 2,589 in five seasons. He’s pretty good but he would already be 4th on the Jets all-time list. That’s just pathetic.
Why can’t the Jets get this right? Why has there been this black hole for much of my life regarding this position and this team. Do they go into the draft thinking “We got this” and then come up empty? Or do they not value a position that is now vital to a modern-day offense in today’s NFL.
Ty Conkiin isn’t the answer, and I feel bad that Aaron Rodgers didn’t have better. Conklin is 14th in NFL tight ends in yards after the catch. He’s ranked 66th in average yards after the catch with a pathetic 3.7!
I will be doing these posts leading up to the draft. History should have nothing to do with the draft or free agency, but this team always has patterns and sadly, this is one of them.
