The Jets Are Wasting Time

I heard Pat Kirwan on “Movin’ the Chains” on NFL Radio and the former Jets front office guru made a lot of sense. He said the team was interviewing too many candidates and wasting precious time because the coaches you interview may lose the staff they’ve pitched to you to other hires. The pitch they give you is time-sensitive, and the Zoom interviews aren’t impactful and there will be an in-person interview after that.

The Jets should have hired a GM by now. Unless they hire the coach first because that’s Woody’s way of doing business. Either way, it should have happened by now.

Hire the general manager today and hopefully, that person likes Aaron Glenn or Brian Flores. I am leaning toward Glenn. I met him as a player, away from the Jets complex, and thought he was a smart man. I still think that and as I write this, I am in a suburb of Detroit and to say Glenn is well thought of is an understatement.

What are the Jets waiting for? The Patriots identified their coach, who was a choice of the Jets, and hired him quickly. That’s what you do but the Jets are on a “fact-finding” mission. It’s the old corporate trick. Interview some employees of a competitor and see what you can find out. For the Jets, it is easy to see what they’re doing wrong so how many times do they need to hear it?

Holding up this process, in turn, holds up Aaron Rodgers from deciding what he’s going to do as well. This matters because there are cap considerations.

The Jets need to figure this all out by the end of the month. Especially if they are going to make scouting staff changes. With the draft coming up, I would be making big changes to the scouting staff or at the very least, bringing in fresh eyes so there is a healthy draft day discussion going on instead of the same old same old.

The clock is ticking.
