Three Early Thoughts on the 2024 World Junior Championship Rosters

I saw the rosters for Sweden, Canada, and Team USA, and here are some early thoughts:

Team USA is loaded with goaltending and defense. Jacob Fowler (Canadiens) could win the starting job at some point in this tournament. That’s not to say their offense isn’t great. I’ve stopped getting upset about names being left off any of the rosters. It’s just a waste of time. I’m counting on Zeev Buium (2024 draft eligible) making the roster. They will have the best top-4 on defense. Sam Rinzel may not make it. That’s how good they are.

Sweden has a well-balanced offense. Filip Bystedt (Sharks) is a player to watch. Forget his league numbers. He competes. Also, Zeb Forsfjall (2024 Seattlle) is a long shot to make the team, but he plays very well against his age group. I’d be remiss if I didn’t say Axel Sandin-Pellikka (2023 Detroit) and Tom Willander (2023 Vancouver) might be the best top pairing in the tournament.

Canada’s roster is underwhelming. I think Macklin Celebrini (2024 top draft prospect) makes the team. Sometimes they cut their young stars. I don’t love their goaltending. Their offense will be outstanding. Jagger Firkus (Seattle) could be a dominant goal scorer for them. Denton Mateychuk (Anaheim) has a chance to be dominant for them too.
